James Blunt: Stop thinking about Britney Spears' panties

James Blunt thinks Britney Spears is a "phenomenal artist," but too many people are thinking about her panties rather than her singing career. During his sold-out Beacon Theatre show Friday night, Blunt had the crowd guffawing when he commented about "how people are probably wondering if Britney is currently wearing knickers in Los Angeles," between songs. And that wasn't the only joke the British singer cracked from the stage.

"I've recently learned that "You're Beautiful" is the number one wedding song in the U.K. I didn't even know there were lists for this kind of thing," Blunt quipped with a sly smirk. "And apparently "Goodbye My Lover" (a sorrowful tune about breaking up) is the number one funeral song," which drew a collective chuckle from the crowd. "You know you shouldn't laugh at that. You're all sick in the head," Blunt joshed. "Well I have one more song, and it's written about divorce. It's called "I'll Take Everything," Blunt said with a smug smile before starting the tune.

After his show, Blunt told the Daily News that he stands by his defense of Britney's right to venture out sans underpants. "I think when you put the emphasis on her knickers and not on her talent, you lose perspective. It really detracts, as a whole, from things that are really important, like global warming and war," Blunt said. "Sending paparazzi to investigate things like this is useless. We're better than that; we have the power to teach and educate. Let's spend our time on that," the crooner said. At least the man practices what he preaches: he showed a touching video during a song about the upheaval in Kosovo. (See more on Tuesday's Rush & Molloy)

On the lighter side, the ladies man revealed he "loves coming to New York City. It really feels like home. We have friends here and our label is here. Everything we could ask for." And his favorite thing about being in NYC? "Eating chicken wings," Blunt responded without missing a beat. "We go to Live Bait [in Union Square] and just chow down on them." Take note, Live Bait diners: If you see James in there, send him a dozen wings and a love note spelled out in hot sauce.
